“Stay hungry, stay foolish.”
The Billion Dollar Hippy is a documentary we’ll happily watch over and over again. Why? Because it’s a great reminder of why we do what we do. We take technology for granted in today’s world, I’m sitting here tapping away on my MacBook Air, whilst my iPhone sits next to me with instagram and whastapps pinging, and my ipad air on it’s stand with my emails up, I’m juggling three screens, Ohh and my own chatty brain might I add. It doesn’t sound too healthy when you write it down, but that’s the truth for many of us running a business, technology has allowed us to become our own boss. We can be everywhere, doing everything. How brilliant!! But, what it can also do is distract us.
Stifle our thinking, creativity and impact our free spirited behaviour. Success is built on trial and error. But how do we fail when success is engrained in to us through technology, failing is not an option. We are more connected than ever, seeing more of the world through a perfectly filtered lens, we are viewers of perfection. Not only are we now onlookers, but we’re also great at passing judgements, if not out loud, in our own brains, day after day, scrolling through instagram, the feelings of ‘I need to do more’ becoming a never-ending conversation in our minds. Distraction by technology is so powerful today, it’s out of control.
Understanding your personal journey and business life in its simplest form is paramount, by detaching yourself from the norms of technological societal pressures and getting back to the WHY and the HOW you’re doing what you’re doing, will help to propel your business forward quickly. Look after the best piece of technology you own, your brain! It needs plugging into the mains every night, turning off and on during the day to reboot, and sometimes it just needs the spinning wheel to make you STOP.
One thing I do know is you have to understand who you are to allow creativity and greatness to come through. You can’t expect magic to happen by sitting on your phone all day, or behind a computer screen. You must find a way to free your mind, to protect your soul and endure the new earth we’re now living on.
